A Magan et al, recorded their findings after recently conducting a search on PUBMED, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for trials on Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty and Return To Sport. “A meta-analysis assessing time for return for sport following hip resurfacing” Arch Orthop Trauma Surg. 2022 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s00402-022-04592-1. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 36040530
The aim of this meta-analysis was to establish the time for RTS following HRA.
Key Findings
Two studies involving a total of 94 patients demonstrated an overall pooled proportion of 91.8% of patients RTS by three months post-operatively.
Four studies including a total of 265 patients determined a pooled proportion of 96.8% of patients able to RTS by the 6-month post-operative stage.
Pooled proportion analysis from all 11 studies comprising 659 patients showed 90.9% of patients were able to RTS by final follow up of 3 years.
JM Comments
These findings will enable more informed discussions between patients and healthcare professionals about time for return to sport following Hip Resurfacing. This is especially encouraging for younger patients who follow an active lifestyle, and those who wish to maintain their existing lifestyle habits.
